Mexican folk dance,
far from home

We are a queer-led folklórico group in London — a familia of dancers who carry the huapangos, jarabes and polkas we grew up with into a city three thousand miles from where they started.

Who we are

It started with a handful of friends who missed dancing.

This is Mexico! began in 2022 with a group of Mexican friends living in the UK who wanted to remember — and learn more of — the regional folklore dances we had known and loved since we were children.

What began as nostalgia turned into something deeper after migrating. Along the way we rediscovered our love for our culture, our dances and their legacy. Dance is an ever-evolving art, and we continue to be amazed at its power to bring cultures together to speak and feast in a single language.

The folklórico map of Europe

You are not the only one dancing out here.

We keep a directory of Mexican folk dance groups across Europe — so that a dancer moving to Berlin, Bergen or Bologna can find their people. It is free, it is public, and it grows every year at Encuentro.
